Morning Prayers

May this little sanctum be preserved sacred to the memory of this pure purpose, and subserve it. Let the Bible and the Christian Science textbook preach the gospel which heals the sick and enlightens the people’s sense of Christian Science. This ministry, reaching the physical, moral, and spiritual needs of humanity, will, in the name of Almighty God, speak the truth that to-day, as in olden time, is found able to heal both sin and disease.

Discussion points

87 — WATCH that you bear in mind Jesus’ rule, “This kind cometh not forth except by prayer and fasting.” The most efficient way to dispose of an animal that troubles you is to cut off its supply of food. Error is sustained by mortal man’s belief in it, and Truth is put into operation by being brought into consciousness as a reality; fasting and prayer, must mean denial and affirmation, starving error and accentuating Truth. You starve error by making nothing of it, by refusing to acknowledge it, think about it, or believe in it; you feed truth and build up a consciousness of good by emphasizing it, affirming it and trusting in it.

Thus we have the perfect rule: starve error by seeing its nothingness, until it falls and is self-destroyed from lack of support; build up a consciousness of good until it becomes so real to you that you can feel its presence constantly, trust in it as a power outside of yourself which you reflect, and know that it is operating in the world and through you by your reflection of it.

Golden Text — “In the way of righteousness is life; and in the pathway thereof there is no death.” — Proverbs 12 : 28

Forum post — With Lovingkindness by Florence Roberts

I hope, dear reader, I am leading you into the understanding of your divine rights, your heaven-bestowed harmony, — that, as you read, you see there is no cause (outside of erring, mortal, material sense which is not power) able to make you sick or sinful; and I hope that you are conquering this false sense. Knowing the falsity of so-called material sense, you can assert your prerogative to overcome the belief in sin, disease, or death.

Prerogative: An exclusive or peculiar privilege.

— from Webster’s 1828 Dictionary

Assert: To affirm positively; to declare with assurance; to aver. To maintain or defend by words or measures; to vindicate a claim or title to; as, to assert our rights and liberties.

— from Webster’s 1828 Dictionary

Like the great Exemplar, the healer should speak to disease as one having authority over it, leaving Soul to master the false evidences of the corporeal senses and to assert its claims over mortality and disease. The same Principle cures both sin and sickness. When divine Science overcomes faith in a carnal mind, and faith in God destroys all faith in sin and in material methods of healing, then sin, disease, and death will disappear.

Forum post — Warfare of Extermination. by Florence Roberts

In a letter to Calvin Hill, Mary Baker Eddy wrote:

“We never can know who is in reality a Christian Scientist until he is tested under fire; then what is left are the dregs unfit for use till purged and purified or they are qualities that evil cannot destroy and are held by the power of God.” She further explained that in some cases the residue was mere sensuous, self-blind human will, whereas only the very opposite of this constitutes the individual, much more the Christian Scientist.

On one occasion Mrs. Eddy said to him in substance, “The first thing I do in the morning when I awake is to declare I shall have no other mind before divine Mind, and become fully conscious of this, and adhere to it throughout the entire day; then the evil cannot touch me.” Many times, she said to him, “All my hours are His.”

I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

— Christ Jesus, John 17: 15

We must form perfect models in thought and look at them continually, or we shall never carve them out in grand and noble lives. Let unselfishness, goodness, mercy, justice, health, holiness, love — the kingdom of heaven — reign within us, and sin, disease, and death will diminish until they finally disappear.

Final Readings

When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought. Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious — as Life eternally is — can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not. Let Christian Science, instead of corporeal sense, support your understanding of being, and this understanding will supplant error with Truth, replace mortality with immortality, and silence discord with harmony.
